What is ACEO?
ACEO [Art Trading Card, Editions and Originals] is miniature art at standard 2.5″ x 3.5″ size, sold by artists to art trading card [ATC] collectors, or to anyone interested in affordable original art.
The art cards can be created on various media, usually thicker stock, such as card stock, canvas, heavy-weight photo or watercolor paper, even mat board, and can be paintings, digital art, photographs or illustrations. If created on light-weight media, a thicker stock material may be adhered to back of the artwork making it sturdier and more card-like. Sometimes, artists embellish ACEO’s with various materials (fabric, ribbons, buttons, rhinestones, etc.).
An ACEO may be Open Edition or Limited Edition, or may be one-of-a-kind. Generally, each ACEO is signed on the front, back, or both sides by the artist. A Certificate of Authenticity [COA] may be provided by the artist as a separate form or on the back of the ACEO.
ACEO prices vary from artist to artist. Price can be affected by media used, especially if the ACEO is archival quality (having extended life when cared for properly, displayed or stored in an album), or if Limited Edition or the original artwork (one-of-a-kind).
Being about the size of a baseball card, an ACEO may be protected in an archival acid-free sleeve or be matted, even framed.
ACEO’s continue to gain in popularity with miniature art collectors, since they are easily stored and displayed…and because they are quite affordable for anyone interested in obtaining original art direct from the artist.
Some artists not only create and sell ACEO’s, but also buy them from other ACEO artists, for collecting or trading.
As an artist, I [Patricia Spork] create ACEO’s, mainly reproductions of my digital photo art (digital manipulation and enhancement of my original photographs). Some of my ACEO’s are drawings and paintings, and some are embellished.
